What Is Luck and What Is Skill in Poker?

There seems to be quite a bit of confusion on what role luck and skill plays in poker. What is most important, luck or skill? This article will debate the subject by beginning to look at different peoples perspective. It will then enter into why the question is not as easy to answer as it may seem at first, moving on to the sensible answer and why this answer makes poker popular.

Many slanderers believe that poker is just about luck. That is not very strange. Poker has a history of a mysterious image and is intricately mixed with other casino games. Those with merely a faint interest in poker might stand by this belief even if they have played poker themselves, as they have not been introduced to the profoundness of the game. A concept such as poker professionals – which should be inconceivable unless skill is a part of poker – does not convince the disbelievers as such a profession instead is obscurely mingled up with images of swindlers and crocks.

Tiresome Poker Players’ Perspective

The tiresome poker player is certain that both factors effect the game. Whenever the player wins a larger pot, skill was the lone contributor. Every loss is deducted as luck, or rather bad luck. It is easy to attribute all losses as bad luck or bad beats, easy on the ego that is. Especially if that ego is boosted from all prior winning decisions. Of course a player with this adamant faith will not be long lived at the poker tables unless the funds backing up this belief is unlimited.

Both Luck and Skill Are Factors

The poker player described above is right about one thing, poker does involve both luck and skill. It is hard to say in what proportions they come, it varies between different poker variants. Sometimes it is also tough to say what is what in a specific situation. The edge or the advantage a player has on another player in a particular hand may be small, not the least bit insignificant, but small. So when the underdog wins that hand, it was most certainly not an unlikely scenario. Still you can say that the underdog was lucky because in the long run, if that situation comes up many times, the underdog will lose in the end.

Why It Is Hard to Distinguish Them

Now if we say that a specific hand is only played once. Then it can be difficult to say if the win should be attributed to luck or if the winning hand did have the odds on its side. The number of factors that should be calculated and approximated are at times to difficult for that. Sometimes it is very straightforward to see what the right decision was, at other times it is all to easy to lure oneself into saying: “Oh my, I made a good play there” or “Oh my, that must have been unlucky”, after a win and a loss respectively. Life is easier that way. After a winning session at the tables it can be difficult to answer: Was I playing well or did I get lucky? The better you know what you are doing, the easier it is to answer. Anyhow, one can certainly not rely on luck in poker.

Time Is the Divider

Luck and skill are both are both elements of poker. Skill can be relied upon. Good decisions can wind up losing, in fact they will lose a certain percentage of the time. The important thing is that if it indeed is a good decision, then the expected result is profitable. Let the same situation come up often enough and the good play will be the long run winner. Luck will not stand a chance. Give it some time and luck will not be factor. That is what separates luck and skill, time. Luck is going against the odds. Eventually math takes over. A bad beat or an unlucky session will not change that. That might disturb your peace of mind, but it will not eliminate the skill factor from poker.

The Complexity of Poker

That is poker. It actually adds to the fun. Most of the time professionals and serious students of the game will come out on top. But in what other game would someone who started six months ago stand a chance against the worlds top ranked players? Imagine that tennis or chess game! There is a nice balance between luck and skill in poker. Sure it is frustrating at times and there is no real substitute to skill but when was the last time someone said “good skill to you”?

Expert Advice on How to Win Online Poker

Albert Einstein once said, “Information is not knowledge; the only true source of knowledge is experience.” That knowledge is not necessarily derived from your own experience but can be acquired through the experience of others. Applying the expertise of professional poker players can save you years of frustration and put you on the fast track to winning online poker.

Online poker differs greatly in may respects than live poker, and because of those variances, one must apply a different set of rules on how to win online-poker than what is normally used in live play. The differences can be measured in the deal of the cards, the actions of the players and your style of play.

The Deal

In online poker tournaments and cash games, the deal is regulated by a set of computer programs and algorithms, chiefly the main program that selects the randomness of a deck is called the Pseudo Random Number Generator (PRNG or RNG). Along with the RNG is a set of specific algorithms that make deterministic decisions based on the players in the game.

The additional poker algorithms are what will deliver the turn and river cards and in many cases produce action inducing hands and bad beats. Quite often, in online Texas holdem, draws are common on the flop and turn, which induces players into action. Although draw heavy boards are seen in live play, the fact is that draws are more likely to occur online because of the imperfections and flaws in the RNG.

The Action

Another factor in internet poker is the action. Action created by draw heavy boards as well as action created by players who chase those draws or attempt to bluff at large pots. The fact that online texas holdem is overwhelmed with novice players and those that do not understand the advanced techniques of the game is one reason your chips are at stake all too often.

Your Style

Depending on your style of play, you may find it necessary to adjust your style in order to compensate for the inexperienced players and computer generated codes of online poker. If your style is aggressive in live play, you may want to mix it up with a little passive play as action players will chase their draws and you will find it difficult to get them to lay down their hands.

Furthermore, the fact that true randomness is not in play at a computer generated poker game, you may want to wait until you are sure you will win the hand before committing too many chips. The culprit behind the majority of bad beats in online poker is more the computer-generated programs that induce action than it is the bad players who can not fold.

The experience of playing hundreds and even thousands of hands in online-poker should begin to show you what is wrong with your game and why you keep losing. The leaks in your game are more easily identified if you carefully and subjectively review all the action in your hands.

Although it is generally accepted that internet poker is the same as live poker, and you are excellent in live play while struggling online may indicate that the problem is in the programs and players more than your game. Knowing this, it is in your best interests to learn more about the poker algorithms and programs to improve your odds and start to win poker online.

Poker Aggression – Strategy Guide For Aggression in Poker

Let me discuss what is in my opinion the secret to winning MTT poker. It evades many of us and is a fine art which must be honed but is the key to becoming a winner in the tables. Aggression…

During the first few years of playing I followed the rules of playing poker. I read a few books, and played ABC poker. The better players I spoke to discussed things like “playing the player not the cards” and “the cards you have are irrelevant” but I just did not understand what they meant.

It is common to be at the table late in an MTT cursing your hole cards, just waiting for the great opportunity to double up, ‘just one hand and we can make the final table’, only to see your blinds dwindle and your ‘M’ factor being so low that when you finally find the elusive big hand you have and have no fold equity, get called and muffed by T7. I know, I have been there, many times.

I don’t remember what clicked in my game or when it clicked but I know it did. My mentor in poker is one of the most aggressive in the game and naturally that rubbed off on me. I found aggression, not out and out knuckle head, dumb ass, shove your chips in the middle and hope for the best, but measured small ball poker which will see your stack increase gradually throughout the tourney with very little risk.

You can pretty much guarantee if you are sat at the same table as me I will be the most aggressive player at the tables, I will be the guy pounding on your blinds while you are waiting on your pretty cards. I can honestly say I am in my absolute comfort zone raising junk hands; I delight in getting dealt 83 off suit in position as I know this is going to be the easiest hand in the world to play. If folded to me I am going to open the pot with a raise in the region of 2.5x, I may even re raise a positional raiser, and I have the easiest fold in the world if I am re-popped.

The only time my heart rate increases is when I am dealt the premium hands as I know my tourney life is now on the line as I have a hand which I am probably committed to.

I will start ramping up my aggression when the blinds are significant enough to make a worthy addition to my stack; this is often around the time the antes kick in. In the ideal world on a passive table you really can push your stack forward to a prominent position and rarely find any resistance.

Let’s see an example of simple maths:

The following is a very typical scenario. Blinds 200-400 ante 30 on a 10 player table, pot total 900. You raise the blinds from the button to 1100, the pot is uncontested (900 profit). You make the same play on the cut off and the small blind calls the 1100 then folds to the C bet on the flop (1800 profit) You then fold the hijack but raise the next hand to 1100, the button shoves on you and you fold (loss 1100) The net profit from your aggression 1600 chips or 4 big blinds. Simply put aggression is a 100% dead cert +EV move.

This also build you an aggressive profile which allows you to get paid off when you do flop big hands, its amazing how often your unfortunate opponent decides to make a stand when you have a genuine hand.

As you find yourself deeper into the tourney the bubble is a great time to go into overdrive, people become weak as the money approaches and this is the perfect time to prey up them. Instead of being the player waiting on that premium hand to get their chips in with you will be the guy looking at the other end of the pay table and trying to maneuver yourself into a position to guarantee a top spot.

When you get used to this aggressive strategy you will find you are like a conductor in an orchestra, you really can get people to play your tune. You are in complete control of your destiny because you are not trying to build your stack with huge peaks and troughs. The thing is with MTT, you only have one life, you have to protect it, avoid 50-50s at all costs, and the nature of a coin flip is that you will win 1 out of every 2. You may get lucky and win 3 in a row but if you keep putting your life on the line you will eventually lose it.

So coming back to my opening discussion about your hole cards being irrelevant……I find the following the best way to sum it up:

Here is a scenario, mid MTT, blinds are 800-1600 and you have a 21k stack, action folds to you in mid position and you have A9off, you feel your hand is strong enough to open and you make it 4200 to go. What are you going to do with your hand when you are shoved upon by the button who has you covered.

Of course you have a junk hand and it must go into the muck. But following the same principles, knowing you are going to fold if you are re-raised why do you need a hand of reasonable strength to open? Isn’t the same true if you raise with 72 in the same position? In fact it’s easier to play, the A9 you have to do some soul searching, how has your opponent been playing, is he making a move, is my A9 good but ultimately you have to fold. No such problems with the 72.

This type of play is alien to many of us, especially the more inexperienced, and it can be difficult to master, you cannot just suddenly flick a switch and make it work, like anything you need to play with it, tinker with it and practice it until you are comfortable. Finding a bet size which suits you is also paramount; the key is to bet the very minimum required to obtain the answer to the question without appearing weak. Protecting your chip stack is just as important as building a stack.

Passive players are easy to read, easy to avoid when they have a hand and easy to exploit and play upon their fear. Don’t be one of them, be the aggressor at the table.

My biggest fear in poker is the person who knows how to counter my aggression, the answer to that particular exam question you will have to work out for yourself my friends….

Good luck at the tables

The Poker Brat!

If there is one thing that could be learned from Poker at least from the example of Phil Hellmuth, it is power. Power of money, power of achievement, power of living life on your own terms, basically the power within!

A college drop out, the success story of Phil began in 1988. And that story would make quite a fat book should we say?! Just a few chapters to mention: won the main event at the Seven card Hi/Low tournament being the youngest payer to do so, one of only three players in history to win three gold bracelets within a single year, a feat not unsurpassed of three consecutive WSOP (World Series of Poker) wins in three consecutive days, At age 42, he is already a member of the Poker Hall of Fame. Hellmuth currently holds the record for most championship bracelets won in the WSOP

Love him, hate him, cant ignore him! This former world champion is called the Poker Brat because of his brash attitude and ego. He is arguably the most successful tournament poker player in the history of the game.

Hellmuth has penned two books, “Play Poker Like the Pros” and the semi-autobiographical “Poker Brat.” This brat has come a long long way from when he first defeated two time Poker world champion Johnny Chan at the WSOP main event as a skinny college kid at the age of 24 being the youngest player to do so then!

Hellmuth’s style of play is extremely aggressive, showing off his strong hands very explicitly is believed to be his greatest weakness and strength in one breath by critics. To add to it he has a sharp ability to read tells.

A strong family person, Hellmuth respects players who set their priorities right in the game. He strives to find and bear in mind just the best in each person which he believes is simply the solution for the violence in people’s mind these days. According to Hellmuth, one of the things that keeps him on his toes is that he remembers the hard times.

He aspires to take efforts that common people understand Poker as a game of opportunities which transcends beyond age, sex, religion, physical prowess or social standing! That everyone can win!
Spoken like a true winner!

Personalized Poker Chips and Custom Poker Chips

History Of The World Series Of Poker: World Series of Poker officially started in 1970 by Benny Binion, owner of Binion’s Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Although 1970 was the first official tournament to determine the “World Champion,” the idea for the game actually came about 21 years earlier in 1949 when Nicloas “The Greek” Dandalos came to Las Vegas and approached Benny Binnion to set up a no-limit poker marathon so Nick could challenge the best poker players in the world. Benny Binnion agreed and arranged a publicly viewed match between Nick Dandalos and the best poker player of the time, Johnny Moss.

The marathon match lasted five months with short sleep breaks, and they played every kind of poker known to man. Johnny Moss finally beat Nick “The Greek” and ended up winning over 2 million dollars.

21 years later Benny Binion decided to restage the game and invite some of the best poker players in the world to determine the “World Champion” and the World Series of Poker was born. Johnny Moss became the first World Series Of Poker Champion by wining the first tournament and also winning again the following year. The first tournament had 7 players, followed by 13 the second year. Binion hoped that someday his tournament would grow to 50 players. The 1982 game had 52 players and the game started growing fast specially after the introduction of satellite competitions. 5 years later the tournament grew to over 2,000 players and the 2002 tournament attracted over 7,500 players. The 2005 World Series Of Poker is expected to draw over 8000 entrants paying an entry fee of $10,000 each and thousands more will try to win a seat at the World Series Of Poker through online satellite tournaments. With an expected prize pool in excess of $80 million, each contestant at the final table will take home at least $1 million in prize money.

Psychology of Poker – Book Review

I just finished reading the “Psychology of Poker,” by Alan Schoonmaker. As an avid online and offline poker player and poker blogger, I read as many books as I can on the topic of poker. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest books ever written. This book really focuses on the psychology of the game and why players play like they do and why you play like you do. This book does not cover or basic skills.

The greatest thing about this book is that it skips the basics and focuses on the finer more subtle parts of the game. In my opinion, these are the things you need to know to be a champion. The book is full of original content and is written in a clear and concise fashion. The book is easy to understand and even though the author dives into some complex issues. I also like the chapter that discusses how to make strategic adjustments based on the types of players you are playing. The author has a Ph.D. in psychology and this is great because he is not like every other poker strategy expert, he gives you advice based on quantifiable scientific evidence.

The one drawback of the book is that it basically ignores the topic of online play. As online poker continues to become more popular, I am afraid this book will become less relevant.

In closing, I highly recommend this book for the intermediate to expert level poker player. What you learn will definitely improve your game.

How to Beat the Poker Pro in a Poker Tournament

There is nothing more intimidating than going against the poker pros you see on television. You may think they always start with pocket Aces but they don’t. They get the same percentage of good and bad hands like the rest of us.

Still, one of the challenges in major tournaments is playing against the poker pro. The pros are aggressive and raise pre-flop more than other players. They don’t even need a hand to do this. In addition, they know how to outplay you on the flop, turn and river.

It is interesting, but some poker pros will fold to your re-raise, while other pros will call your re-raise. The pros that call re-raises are very tough to beat, because if they sense weakness, they will outplay you.

The correct move against the top poker pros is not to try to continually outplay them. Instead, find your spots to move all-in and put on maximum pressure. Pros hate the all-in move pre-flop since it takes their skill out of the game. It also makes it easier for you since there are no other decisions needed.

The key to winning poker tournaments is to accumulate chips and to win. While poker pros can intimidate players, try not to be one of those players. Look at the poker pro as an opportunity to add chips by pushing them all-in.

For example, if the pro has raised for the fourth straight hand, and everyone folds to you in the big blind, what should you do? Push all-in. Since you haven’t played a hand for a while, the pro will think you have the pocket Aces and fold. Best of all you don’t have to use this play that often to add lots of chips into your stack. And who knows, the one time the pro calls you, you may be the one with pocket Aces!

Internet Poker Strategy

When it comes to playing internet poker a good and intelligent player will base his play on the information that is available to him. It is important that they should have all the information relating to the basics of the game along with what betting limits are in place and just when they need to fold their cards. Certainly having a good internet poker strategy in place is extremely important to any player whether a novice or professional before they start playing.

When it comes to playing online today there are a number of different sites which now provide a facility for those playing to record the history of each game that they take part in. By having this facility available to them a player is able analyze their moves from a game they took part in previously and then using this they will be able to hopefully avoid making the same mistakes in the future. It is important that when working out any kind of strategy when taking part in a game of poker a player know how to calculate the pot odds in order that they can determine whether they are likely to win or not. Plus it will help them to find out which are the best kinds of hands to play in order to ensure that they win on a constant basis.

It is important that the strategies a person uses when playing should help them to decide when they should raise, when they should be betting and when they should fold as they need to be able to analyze very quickly how the game is going. It is important that they learn how to use tactics on how to bluff even if they hand they have is only moderate. Using this kind of strategy within a game will help to confuse those that they are playing against and may cause them to reveal their cards earlier than they wanted to.

It is important that one internet poker strategy that all players must keep in their mind at all times is not to play above their budget. Those that play within their budget limits will often find that they have increased their chances of winning as often they discover that their losses and their wins will generally cancel each other out through out the course of the days play. Therefore by developing your own strategy when playing internet poker will in turn help to increase your chances of winning in the future.
